Oh ho ho. I’m not the biggest fan of Red Velvet (or any SM group for that matter), but from time to time I’ll check out their songs and music especially if there’s some kind of buzz around their comeback. After hearing many people talk about their latest comeback ‘Peek-a-Boo’, I decided to check out the MV myself and now I understand what all the hype was about.
The last song from Red Velvet that I personally liked was ‘Russian Roulette’ and that was.. last year (it’s still a great song to this day to be honest). I wasn’t really feeling either ‘Rookie’ or ‘Red Flavor’ which is probably their two most popular songs that also made them more popular and public-friendly this year. ‘Peek-a-Boo’ was a little different this time where the girl group returned to their scarier and darker roots rather than their more upbeat and cheerful tropical sounds.
As mentioned earlier, I’m not the biggest fan of Red Velvet. I occasionally check out their title tracks and if I like it, I’ll listen to it and if I’m not really feeling it I kind of just ignore them. But with ‘Peek-a-Boo’, it was just so good that I immediately went to watch the MV twice again: the first time to watch the MV and then the second time around to listen to the song. ‘Peek-a-Boo’ to me kind of reminds me of a darker ‘Russian Roulette’ and kind of pales in comparison to ‘Russian Roulette’ but is still better to me than ‘Rookie’ or ‘Red Flavor.’ I definitely do understand the hype for it though and I also approve of the music video (maybe a little bit too late for Halloween but it’s still up there).
Not to forget the rest of the album ‘Perfect Velvet’ which included great b-side tracks. Some of my favorites include ‘I Just’, ‘Kingdom Come’, and ‘My Second Date.’ I’ve actually been listening to this album since its release and have even been checking out Red Velvet’s lives of ‘Peek-a-Boo’ because I’m that in love with the song.
As someone who is a lot more biased and connected to the 2nd generation girl groups, my favorite among the 3rd generation girl groups would probably be Red Velvet (and I’m not even THAT big of a fan of them). If they continue to release more songs like ‘Russian Roulette’ and ‘Peek-a-Boo’ though, things could definitely change and I might just turn into a fan. f(x) is my favorite girl group and since they’re inactive now, Red Velvet is probably the closest to the type of music that f(x) made which is why I prefer some of their music over other girl groups. Unfortunately, Red Velvet has either been a hit or miss for me, but I do think they’re slowly finding their sound especially after this year where they’ve been delivering consistent hits and therefore have been gaining more popularity. This year is probably Red Velvet’s year in terms of popularity among the 3rd generation girl groups so I’m looking forward to seeing what they have in store in the future.
